The 2nd Conference of Digital Belt and Road (DBAR 2017) to be held in Hong Kong

The 2nd Conference of the Digital Belt and Road (DBAR 2017) will be held in Hong Kong, China, on December 6-8, 2017. Hosted by the Digital Belt and Road (DBAR) Program and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), the event will provide an international platform for participants who are engaged in the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road initiative (consolidated as the "Belt and Road"), specifically in research and applications of Earth observation technology.

The conference is a continuation of events held in recent years to promote Earth observation and big data for China's Belt and Road initiative. The International Symposium on Earth Observation for the Maritime Silk Road (EMSR) was held in Sanya in 2015, releasing the "Sanya Declaration on International Cooperation on Earth Observation for Maritime Silk Road Development". In Beijing in 2016, the International Symposium on Earth Observation for One Belt and One Road (EOBAR) established a "big Earth data" alliance, expecting big data to be the engine driving the construction and operation of the Belt and Road.

The DBAR vision promotes international cooperation that integrates Earth observation science, data, technology, and applications to address environmental change and attain the United Nations' sustainable development goals (SDGs) in the Belt and Road region. The uniqueness of DBAR is the goal of building upon the diverse Earth observation capacities in the Belt and Road countries in Asia, Africa, and Europe through comprehensive, well-funded action.

Last year, DBAR established seven working groups on Big Earth Data, Agriculture and Food Security, Coastal Zones, Environmental Change, Natural and Cultural Heritage, Disaster Risk Reduction, and Water, and two task forces on Urban Environment and High Mountain and Cold Regions.
