DBAR-HiMAC

The DBAR High Mountain and Cold Region Working Group (DBAR-HiMAC) focuses on science-driven objectives to link existing Earth observations, archive and document Earth observation data and geophysical products, and produce knowledge and services based on a scientific understanding of changes and their interactions in High Mountain and northern Cold Regions (HiMAC). Big Earth Data on HiMAC will be incubated to support sustainable development through improving risk awareness and enhancing assessments for infrastructure construction (roads, pipelines, and industrial plants), environmental changes, energy supply, disaster reduction, and agricultural development over the high-altitude and high-latitude Belt and Road regions.

Overview of Activities
DBAR-HiMAC identified five objectives which include developing methodologies and tools for retrieval of remote sensing data and integration with in-situ measurements, promote data sharing and data generation, including time series of aerosol optical dept and land surface albedo, study interactions between global climate change and cryosphere changes in the high Asia and Northern Eurasia, and support science-based policy decision makers. All the objectives, excluding the last one, have been targeted through dedicated projects that have been launched or under development, whereas the last objectives are being pursued to be discussed in meeting to be arranged in the next phase.
DBAR-HiMAC will continue to pursue the five objectives identified during the first phase. In addition, the group also plans to provide information services to support shipping through the northern ocean routes through the Arctic in collaboration with DBAR-COAST. It has multiple ongoing research projects. It is also working on releasing datasets in the next phase and onsite processing systems from sentinel data. A Field campaign protocol is in development and trip is being planned for the next phase.
DBAR-HiMAC will work on operational data and products services on High Mountain and Cold Regions to facilitate Belt and Road activities. It will explore opportunities for joint initiatives within the Association of National Scientific Organizations (ANSO) along the Belt and Road Road.

Events
DBAR-HiMAC organized two workshops in the last two years, that are HiMAC2017 in Beijing, China, and HiMAC2018 in Sodankyla, Finland. It has also developed a TV program on information about the Belt and Road. The program highlighted two segments, one on “the fundamental elements of snow, and ice monitoring through remote sensing”, and another on “the applications to the Polar Silk Road, and awareness warning in the Polar Silk Road”.
DBAR-HiMAC will continue to work on collaborative meetings, session, and workshops to strengthen networks and research.

Network Development
DBAR-HiMAC has developed diverse range of partnerships that involve project level collaborations, data sharing agreements, event organization and joint forums. It has also made major contributions in activities of other international initiatives, strengthening the level of cooperation for future endeavors. During the last phase the group has developed networks with multiple European universities and also with international organization such as the Group on Earth Observations (GEO).
DBAR-HiMAC aims to work more with DBAR ICoE-Helsinki. It is also committed to strengthen the collaborations through joint events, workshops, meeting and conferences.

Deliverables
DBAR-HiMAC has multiple deliverables under development. It includes dataset and database development, website, online system and data portal. It has also published research papers in international journals. It has targeted to develop datasets, methodologies and models. It will continue to publish research and international reports. Develop programs for capacity buildings, education and technology transfer.

SDGs Addressed
DBAR-HiMAC focused on SDGs 6, target 6.5, SDG13, target 13.1. It will study the indicator system of SDGs over High Mountain and Cold Areas, to provide advisory reports for the Belt and Road region and SDGs, to build the scientific knowledge base of the High Mountain and Cold Areas.
